Make your own scoring tool

Overview

Create a custom multi-point scoring tool using epoxy putty and small metal nails or pins. This project introduces students to basic toolmaking techniques while producing a functional tool for scoring and slipping, or for creating textured patterns on clay surfaces.

Materials

– Two-part epoxy putty like this one
– Nitrile gloves
– Sharp knife or clay cutting tool
– Small stainless steel nails, pins, or wire pieces
– Super glue (optional, for reinforcement)
– Clay scraps for testing

Instructions

1. Prepare your workspace and gather materials
2. Mix and shape the epoxy
– Cut epoxy putty, making sure you have enough to make the handle of the scoring tool
– Put on nitrile gloves
– Knead together thoroughly until uniform color is achieved
– Shape into a comfortable handle form

3. Insert scoring points
– While putty is still soft, insert nails/pins at desired spacing
– Consider pattern options: linear rows, clustered points, asymmetric arrangements
– Press firmly to seat fasteners into the putty
– Adjust positioning before epoxy begins to cure
– After the epoxy putty cures, put a small bead of super glue at the base of the nails/pins and allow it to flow into the spaces or holes where the nail enters to the putty.

4. Cure and test
– Allow tool to cure fully per the instructions on the epoxy putty package
– Test on your clay work and make note of any adjustments that will help your process

Considerations

Pattern design: How many points? What spacing creates effective scoring without tearing clay?
Ergonomics: Will the tool fit comfortably in your hand during extended use?
Durability: Are the scoring points secure enough for repeated use?
