Remix Colab ProjectThis project takes inspiration from the vibrant remix culture prevalent in 3D printing communities. Sharing, modifying, and remixing 3D models is a common practice that fosters collaboration and creativity.

Objective: The Remix Colab project encourages you to engage with the global 3D printing community by exploring and utilizing existing models from platforms like Thingiverse and Printables. Students will learn the value of collaborative art-making in the digital age by integrating these models into their own unique creations, thus promoting a dialogue between their personal artistic vision and the collective creativity of the 3D printing community.

Steps:

1. Make accounts at both Thingiverse.com and Printables.com. This doesn’t cost anything, and once you have an account, you can save and organize models, create collections, and even upload and share your own models!

2. Research and Selection: You will begin by researching available 3D models on Thingiverse and Printables. You are encouraged to select models that resonate with your artistic vision or challenge you to think outside your creative comfort zone. You must select at least 5 models.

3. Concept Development: Think hard about the models you are selecting. Ask yourself why you are choosing them, what it means for them to be mashed together, and how the meaning of one object changes when another object is combined with it. Asking questions like these is a very important step in this process. Next, you will consider how the chosen models can be altered, combined, or recontextualized to create something entirely new.

4. Digital Fabrication: Using Shapr3D, you will then digitally manipulate, combine, and remix the selected models. Use the 3D modeling skills we have learned thus far, such as scaling, stretching, cutting, combining, and modifying elements of the models to achieve your desired outcome. Creativity and innovation are key. You are making your own unique remix that combines and builds upon existing objects. The object you create should be your own original artwork.

5. Printing and Presentation: You will print your final designs yourself, so think about how well the object will print as you are designing it. We will critique the final printed object. You are required to upload the final digital model AS WELL AS the found models you used in your project.  

The pieces must fit inside an imaginary box that is roughly 125mm x 125mm x 125mm. This is a volume of roughly 2,000,000mm, so if you want to make a long and thin work, you can do so within about 2,000,000 cubic millimeters. For example, you could make something that is 200mm x 50mm x 155mm and that would still fit within the imaginary box.
