This project requires you to explore the creative potential of artificial intelligence as a brainstorming tool, using a tool such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude to develop and refine ideas for an artwork that you will then make out of clay. The goal is to think of AI as a collaborator, offering suggestions and generating possibilities that you can shape and respond to. However, like any tool, its true value lies in how you guide and direct it with your unique perspectives and interests.
Through a series of at least ten exchanges with the AI (ten questions from you in a back-and-forth dialogue), you will engage in a conversation where your inquiries, challenges, and refinements push the AI to produce ideas tailored to your vision. This back-and-forth process emphasizes that while AI can inspire and provoke thought, it is your individual perspective that transforms these raw ideas into something meaningful and personal.
The culmination of this project is an artwork that reflects the interplay between machine-generated inspiration and your creative vision. Alongside your piece, you will present a reflection on the process, detailing how your dialogue with the machine shaped your artistic journey and influenced the final outcome. This exercise is both an exploration of technology’s role in art and a reminder of the power of human creativity to guide and contextualize new tools.
Tips for Success:
1) Approach the AI with curiosity and flexibility. Let the process guide you toward unexpected directions.
2) When you find one part of a response interesting, or it gives you more ideas, ask directly about it. Drill down into the nuggets that are interesting – you never know where they will lead you.
3) Don’t be afraid to challenge or push back on the AI’s suggestions; refining ideas is part of the collaboration.
4) Copy and paste the dialogue into another document so you track the ideas and return to them if necessary. You will submit the copy of the conversation you’ve had with the AI, so make sure and save it.
By incorporating the AI into your creative practice, this project aims to expand your perspective on the tools and collaboration available to artists when we make work. The key is to have fun and start experimenting!
