Project Assignment: Shaping Light
Objective: This project challenges you to design an innovative and aesthetically pleasing hanging light fixture using digital modeling software and 3D printing technology. You will explore the intersection of art, design, and technology as you conceptualize and fabricate unique lampshades that showcase your creativity while also considering practical considerations such as printability and functionality.

1. Research and Concept Development: You will begin by researching various styles of light fixtures, lamp shades, and design inspirations. You may explore historical and contemporary examples of hanging light fixtures to inform your design concepts. Make sketches that you can use when designing your lampshades. Push yourself to be creative – the goal is not to make just any old shade, but rather, something that is unique to you.
2. Digital Modeling: You will use Shapr3D (or Blender if you are experimenting with it) to design your lamp. Again, you need to push yourself – this is the final project of the semester, so now is your time to shine. Experiment with shapes, textures, and forms, pushing the boundaries of traditional light fixture design while ensuring your designs are suitable for 3D printing.
3. Printability Considerations: Before finalizing your designs, you need to critically evaluate the printability of your models. Assess factors such as overhangs, support structures, and printing orientation, using your creativity to find innovative solutions to potential printing challenges. You need to make sure your model is scaled appropriately for the printers. The Bambu printer’s max size is 245mm x 245mm x 245mm. You can combine parts post-printing if you’d like – that could be a way to solve limitations in the scale or complexity of your design.
4. Prototyping and Testing: Before printing your full-size object, you will print scale models to critically assess the form, solve any visible or structural issues, and ensure the functionality of your model.
5. Integration with Wiring Mechanism: While creative design is the primary focus of the project, you will also need to consider the integration of your printed object with the light fixtures. You will need to adapt your designs to accommodate the wiring harness, ensuring seamless assembly and compatibility with the electrical components while maintaining the creative integrity of your designs.
Assessment Criteria: You will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
1. Creativity and Originality of Design
2. Technical Proficiency in Digital Modeling
3. Attention to Printability and 3D Printing Considerations
4. Integration of Design with Wiring Mechanism
5. Craftsmanship and Quality of Prototypes
