MOLDING MATERIALS 101

SLIP CASTING RECIPIES 

Cone 6 Slip Regular Grolleg (generic casting slip)
-2 gallons H20
-Darvan…68 grams
-OM4…..Ball Clay 10 lbs
-EPK…..5 lbs
-Grolleg…..5 lbs
-G200 Feldspar…..5 lbs
-Neph Sy 5lbs
-Flint (Silica)…..325 7.5 lbs

-Begin with 2 gallons of H20.  Add 68g of Darvan deflocculant.  Add dry materials in order as listed, blunging thoroughly after each material is added.

 (for cone 10 slip use “Custer Feldspar” instead of Neph Sy)

Cone 6 Casting Slip High Grolleg (very fine and and chalky white in appearance when fired)
-10 liters H2O
-Darvan…..80 grams
-Bentonite…..100 grams
-Grolleg…..24 lbs+104 grams
-Neph Sy…..10 lbs+60 grams
-Silica…..9 lbs+314 grams 

-Add materials together, as listed in order above, blunging thoroughly after each material is added.

(for cone 10 slip use “Custer Feldspar” instead of Neph Sy)

SILICON MOLDS
(all of the below are purchasable through Sterling Supply Inc and through Brick in the Yard)

Silicone Rubbers
-GI 1000 (Pourable)-with activator
-XT 493 (Brushable)-with activator
(two part molding process)

-When working with these materials, apply two to three layers of the GI-1000.  This is a very runny product so use sparingly.  This very thin layer captures the fine detail in the object you’re molding.  Next add on multiple thick layers of theXT 493.  This thicker agent protects the detailed layer of GI-1000, thickening the mold structure.

-White Hydrocal
-Hydrostone
(these two plasters are considerably more durable than most regular plasters)
